Query Submissions

 

Exile Publishing is currently seeking queries for any genre, in any style, and at any length. Unlike most publishing companies and literary agents, we don’t have stringent guidelines for submissions. We even courage writers to go outside the standard query format in order to catch our attention, just as long as you speak from the heart, and of course, keep it focused on your work. All that we ask is that 1) your work is finished and polished before querying; 2) you submit no more than one chapter; and 3) please include everything inside the body of the email.

Now let us tell you about our goals and how we work. First, Exile Publishing is looking to establish a strong presence on the internet. Second, we hope to set up headquarters for paper printing in the near future, with Pittsburgh being our ideal location. Third, if we take you on, we will negotiate a fair and flexible contract that doesn’t disproportionately benefit us. We oppose the standard (and unfair) commissions used by major publishing companies and literary agents. We understand that the writer, not us, is the one who has already done the “real” work, and so we value you more than that extra buck. From the start, we will finance and promote your work as best as we can, and from there, see what kind of readership you are capable of building. Although we are currently open to a flood of queries, we are looking to establish a small team of innovative writers who will ultimately change the face of literature and art. Call it a movement in-the-works. As of now, we have made one selection: the young pioneer Brian Celio who has informally agreed to publish his second and third works with us. Having studied literature for nine years now and proving in Catapult Soul that he is exactly what we are looking for, he will be assisting us in our selections. Whoever is chosen next will also be encouraged to give us input. We project our core team will consist of approximately 5 writers. We want everybody on our team to be highly respected in their own right so that, in turn, Exile Publishing will be known for discovering and advancing nothing but the best works of our time.

As much as we would love to have a big team, we know that it’s not feasible if we are to keep “quality” as our main objective. For this reason, we can’t guarantee that you will be probed further than your query. However, as a publishing company that understands the writer who has queried endlessly to agents who never respond, or after months finally send back an impersonal letter of rejection, we promise to at least give a response in a timely manner and possibly a brief reason why and/or feedback. We are not trying to hurt anybody’s feelings but we are also not looking to waste anybody’s time.

Finally, we are open-minded and hungry for works that go against the status quo, but we will NOT accept works that advocate racism, sexism, pedophilia, animal abuse, or war. We will, however, consider works that cover these themes, whether satirically or seriously, as long as it is done in good artistic taste.
